About This Trip

Explore a part of Japan far from the tourist trail. Kyushu is a large island sitting at the southern tip of Japan and is arguably the most beautiful part of the whole country. With towering volcanoes, lush green scenery and Onsen virtually everywhere, only its rich history and culture trump its natural wonder.

The wild nature of this dramatic region has produced many of the legends of Japanese mythology, giving it a mystical and enchanting element that you don't get anywhere else in the country. On this guided tour, you will discover the very best that Kyushu has to offer and get a beautiful overview of its history and mythology from your local guides.

You will explore the beautiful city of Fukuoka, a massive city with a homely small-town feel. You will be able to completely relax and indulge in Onsen culture in one of the most delightful onsens in Japan, in Yufuin village. You will walk around, rather than bathe in, the 7 Hells of Beppu, a series of incredibly hydrothermal pools of varying colours that steam and bubble, rife with legend. You will spend time in Nagasaki, one of the most delightful cities you will ever find despite its dark history and you will take a trip to Arita Porcelain Town, and Karatsu Pottery Town to gaze at some of the finest examples of ceramic craftsmanship in the world.

This is a chance to explore the Japan of myth and legend, of discovering a part of Japan different from all the others and one that will be embedded in your memory forever.

highlights

The main thing about this tour is that you are exploring a part of Japan that many choose not to visit. The draw of Tokyo and Kyoto are understandably massive, but after spending a bit of time in Japan you soon realise that there is pretty much no part of this country that is not worth visiting. And Kyushu is up there with the very best.

The landscape is simply incredible. As you ride on the train from city to city, you will gaze longingly out the window at what appears to be an ever-changing Hokusai painting. The layers of mountains and volcanoes stretch back into the distance, each a slight variation of greeny grey and you can instantly understand why the bulk of the country’s legends grew from Kyushu.

And it is the volcanoes that give this region such an abundance of joys. The 7 Hells of Beppu, not only have an amazing name, but are a stunning example of geothermal hot springs, up there with the better-known ones of New Zealand or Iceland. The onsen culture in this part of Japan is so ingrained, that it just becomes part of daily life, a sedate and meditative way to end each day. And, the richness of the volcanic soil produces natural produce so incredibly tasty that you will enjoy every bite of every meal you have.
