About This Trip
Cambodia is a country filled with surprises. Often overlooked by its more ‘tourist-friendly’ neighbours, Cambodia is a country whose cultural delights are set to dazzle visitors and whose drive to create beauty from the ashes of their tragic past, has created a phenomenal culture rooted in optimism.
The past is still hugely important in Cambodia and in order to fully enjoy what the country has become, we must pay homage to the past, and what a past it is! At the start of the tour, we will spend a full day exploring its Angkors, the series of mind-blowing temples, partly reclaimed by nature which only adds to the mystique of these World Heritage sites. You will have a full afternoon at the glorious Angkor Wat, guided around and shown its main features and hidden gems.
We also experience the dark past of Cambodia, spending an afternoon reflecting on the tragedies of the Killing Fields and atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. We won’t lie, it is a tough thing to witness, even after all this time, but in order to fully understand the complex optimism of the Cambodian people, this trip to its dark past is essential.
We will also focus on the past and future in our cultural experiences. You will take an immersive trip into rural Cambodia, seeing life as it has been lived for thousands of years. You will visit rural communities to discover how they are fusing their rich past with the opportunities of the future to thrive. You will visit stilted villages over a tranquil lake, be blessed by monks in a rural temple, and revel in delicious traditional cuisine.
You will also spend time in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, two unexpectedly modern cities. Siem Reap has grown through its proximity to Angkor Wat, offering a tourism paradise. Phnom Pen has blossomed into one of the most liveable and delightful cities in Asia. In reaction to the adversity suffered under the Khmer Rouge, every effort has been made to create a city that balances tranquillity, beauty, and modern aesthetics. A city you will definitely never forget!
