Uncover Japan on this exclusive self-guided tour. Explore the unique, beautiful culture of Japan by truly immersing yourself in its daily life. From riding bullet trains with the locals to exploring the landmark cities and getting right off the beaten track, this is a tour to take at your own pace.
Japan is one of the most dynamic countries in the world. An electrifying culture that has one foot firmly planted in its rich history and age-old customs, and one always leaping into a no-holds-barred neon future. This blend is apparent everywhere and the joy of straddling the two, of being in a quiet, ethereal temple one minute, and a cafe staffed by wild robots the next, is what makes Japan so incredibly magical.
To understand more of the culture, you really shouldn't see it from a coach's window. It is well worth discovering the unbelievable friendliness, inquisitiveness and helpfulness of the Japanese people by getting out amongst them. We have designed this trip exactly for that purpose. While you will meet local guides for exploring parts of the cities, they won't be there for the full journey. Your tickets will all be purchased, your hotels booked and your guide immaculately written, but you can do whatever you want in between those times. Free to discover, and what a list of places we have put together for you to discover!
You kick off in Tokyo, where your immersion begins. After being transferred from the airport, you can spend some time exploring your surroundings. There is an outstanding temple just minutes from your hotel which is a must-visit. After a full-day guided tour, and a free day in Tokyo, you are off into the foothills of Mt Fuji, at Hakone. Here you can experience a gentler side of Japan, soaking in Onsen (natural hot baths) hiking glorious trails and gazing at the expanse of Mt Fuji.
Then you are off on a couple of trips by bullet train, or Shinkansen as it is known in Japan. You will whiz up to the north of the island to visit the stunning city of Kanazawa, one that is only just getting on the tourist radar. With an ancient centre, an incredible castle and arguably the most beautiful garden in Japan, it is a city of wonder.
Your final leg is another trip on the Shinkansen to spend some time in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Kyoto. Its ancient beauty is pretty much unparalleled anywhere in the world, combining old-world perfection with modern-day sensibilities. An incredible end to a trip you will never forget.
