About This Trip

Iberia is the most south-westerly corner of Europe and is made up of Spain and Portugal. On this extensive trip, we are going to explore every single highlight of this region's glorious, vibrant cultures.

You begin in the capital of Spain, Madrid, but quickly we head north to the wondrous Basque Country, an area of the country that identifies as non-Spanish. The Basque language is so completely unrecognisable from every other language in the world, but as ever, it is worth learning a few words just for politeness! Here you will visit the food capital of Spain, San Sebastian, a glorious city with cobblestoned old town famed for its pintxos, tiny bite-sized morsels, bursting with incredible flavour.

You will move along the north coast, visiting some of Spain’s locals-only spots, with glorious beaches, stunning Gothic architecture and an ever-changing palate of local cuisine.  You will then dip down into Galicia, following part of the world-famous pilgrimage, the Camino de Santiago.

Then, it is a short jump over to Portugal, where you will visit the majestic cities of Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon, with many enticing stops in between. The cultural differences here are obvious, being that Portugal is a completely different country, however, when you come back to Southern Spain, you will be shocked that it is the same country you have already been in. The baked landscapes of Moorish Spain contrast heavily with the greens of the north, but the fusion of cultures here has produced some of the world's most incredible sites and by visiting Cordoba, Seville and Granada, you will spend time revelling amongst them.

The final stretch of the trip is along the southern coast, through Valencia to finish up in the Gothic/Gaudi masterpiece that is the vibrant and exciting Barcelona.  So much to pack in, and so much passion to absorb, but we have ensured that every corner of Spain is covered, and every experience treasured, so you have the most complete and wondrous adventure in Iberia.

highlights

Spending 20 days in two of the most vibrant countries in the world, picking out highlights is tough. The main highlights are obvious. Barcelona is jaw-dropping, Porto is majestic, but so friendly and down to earth and Madrid is stately and beautiful. However, to us, it's those places that you might not have heard of or had no real intention of visiting that really stand out.

The Basque Country is stunning. San Sebastian is a glittering white city, with an incredible crescent beach that really draws you in. In the evenings the streets are packed as people jump from bar to bar, snacking on pintxos, drinking sublime local wines and riojas and living life the way it is meant to be lived. Bilbao, by contrast, is a working city, so friendly, so down to earth and even standing outside the Guggenheim museum is worth the visit, arguably the most stunning modern building in the world.

Then there is the contrasting south. Seville, Cordoba and Granada have a completely different cuisine, but no less delicious. Everything about these grand cities is based on a clash of cultures, quite literally as the North African moors invaded time and time again and left their mark with some of the most incredible buildings you will ever see. Slim, winding streets keep off the heat of the day and at night the squares fill with people eating, drinking and living a very sociable, outdoor life.

From here you travel along the coast, taking in Bilbao, Santander, Oviedo and Santiago de Compostela, before heading into Portugal. The Portuguese leg of the trip sees you visiting Porto, Coimbra, Fatima and Lisbon, before heading back into southern Spain. You visit Cordoba, Seville and Granada before starting up the southern coast to Valencia before finishing up in the wondrous Barcelona.
